Jack Lowery is the author of It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic (Bold Type Books), a book about the artist collective Gran Fury, and the work they produced in conjunction with ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful was named an Editor’s Choice by the New York Times Book Review, and was also shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. His essays and articles have appeared in publications such as The Atlantic, The Times Literary Supplement and The Awl. He teaches in the MFA Writing Program at Columbia University. As an editor, he has published the poetry of David Wojnarowicz. He lives in Brooklyn.
